A while back I announced that I would be directing a play called Pillars in the FLoYD Youth Theatre Festival. Well, the show goes live this coming week on Thursday and Friday. Here is a synopsis for Pillars:

Humans have often seen themselves as being the top species. Often they take things for granted. So much so that aliens that have been monitoring humanity think they have failed in the pillars of society – science, religion, business and arts. Humans now have to answer to what they have done and defend themselves from possible annihilation.

Tickets are $10 at the door. Shows start at 7pm and is located at The Refinery (609 Dufferin Ave). Come and check it out!

Also, here’s a preview of one of the media clips that is used in the show:

Deserving? – Serj Tankian

Serj Tankian started out as the lead singer of System of a Down. He then took a break to do some solo work under his own name while some of the others did work with the band Scars on Broadway.

“Deserving” is on the latest album from Serj Tankian. This new album has a different sound from his first album, but in my opinion this new sound is so much cooler. He mixes orchestral with synthesized music creating a different sound that I haven’t heard before. I haven’t listened to it near as much as I have previous songs of the week, but it is just that good to take the honours this week. It’s a different sound from his Elect the Dead album in a good way.

Oh so close to buying some System of a Down tickets… just need to figure out what my summer job is.

Forces of Victory – Gogol Bordello

Gogol Bordello is a band from New York who fall into a Gypsy Punk genre. When I first heard of them, I had no idea who they were or what they played. I finally heard them at a friend’s house and immediately recognized the Ukrainian influence in their music. I also just found out that they are going to be touring with System of a Down (one of my top favorite bands) in 2011.

Anyway, the song I’m in love with this week is their track “Forces of Victory”. The main thing I love about this song are the instruments. The drum part is wonderful and the violins are awesome. Much like last week’s favorite song, I find this one very catchy and listen to it everyday. Not sure what else to say about it, just listen to it

Now to find tickets for a Gogol/System show. Later!

Decided to try something new in my blog – a favourite song of the week. First one up is back from my elementary school days…

Creepy Crawling – Chumbawamba

For those who haven’t heard of Chumbawamba before, they are an English band that started in 1982. Their album Tubthumper was released in 1997 and sent them mainstream, primarily with the single “Tubthumping” (We get knocked down, but we get up again…). I recently picked up the album and listened to it straight through… So many memories came flooding back and I remembered just how much I enjoyed the CD.

I’ve been listening to “Creepy Crawling” almost every time I’ve jumped into the car over the last week. It has a really neat guitar riff right off the start that sets the tone well. Also, the lyrics, though not always making sense, are performed in such a catchy way. Favorite line: “Too much drink in your tum, tum, tum.” Not sure why, I’m just amused by it and the way he sings it. The whole song just has a really slick sound and has earned its spot as my song of the week.

A close second worth a mention here is “The Good Ship Lifestyle”. Another great song but only slightly edged out by the post’s topic.

Held every year, the event raises money for local charities by offering the service of sending a pie to a friend or foe in the city, and allowing these <del>victims</del> people to pay to redirect it or (for free) take it in the face. I’ve been managing this website for the last 4 years.

My sister and her husband have been involved with a youth drama festival for 5 years now and I have been there supporting them. My support has basically been coming out to their shows and fundraising events. Recently I have also been acting as videographer and webmaster for the group known as FLoYD Fest (website). At the end of the last FLoYD Fest in the summer of 2010, I had pretty much decided I want to be a part of the next year’s festival. I tried writing a play but ended up being indecisive in the topic of my play and never finished one. In December, I submitted my request to direct.

FLoYD Fest’s play submission deadline was in the middle of January. I had the artistic director send me a play to read over as a potential for me to direct. The thought behind it was that there were a number of multimedia components which I would be capable of creating. Recently, I was informed that I will be directing the play called Pillars at FLoYD Fest 2011.

I’m not sure if I fully understand all that will be required of me as a director but I’m sure I can handle it. I know pretty much all of the other directors so if I need help there’s always someone there. I’m excited with the idea of being able to direct a show. Having a vast amount of student group experience, teamwork is a breeze (besides the obvious people wrangling). I’m also looking forward to another chance to do video editing. I enjoy it but often don’t have any ideas of what to do. We’ll see how this whole thing goes. It’s my last chance to participate in the festival due to the age limitation so I hope to make it a good one.

Anyway, socializing calls for me now. Have a good v-day all!
